What Are The Dosage And Administration?
Ensure to use U-40 insulin syringe only, syringe other than this will result in incorrect dosing. This product is for subcutaneous injection in cats only.
ProZinc insulin should be mixed by gently rolling the vial before withdrawing each dose from the vial. With the use of U-40 insulin syringe, it should be administered subcutaneously on the back of the neck or on the side of the cat. At the start, the initial recommended ProZinc dose is 0.1 – 0.3 IU insulin per pound of cat body weight and 0.2 – 0.7 IU/kg every 12 hours. The dose should be given parallel with or right after a meal.
Your cat should be re-evaluated by the veterinarian at regular intervals, to adjust the dose depending on both clinical signs and glucose nadirs until adequate glycemic control has been attained. In the successful field study, glycemic control was suggested satisfactory if the glucose nadir from a 9-hour blood glucose curve was between 80 and 150 mg/dL and clinical signs of hyperglycemia such as polyuria, weight loss and polydipsia were improved.
Further modifications in the dosage may be required with changes in the cat’s diet, body weight, or related medication, or if the cat develops simultaneous infection, inflammation, neoplasia, or an additional endocrine or other medical disorder.
What Are The Contraindications?
ProZinc insulin is contraindicated in cats sensitive to protamine zinc recombinant human insulin. It can also contraindicate with any other ingredients in this product. ProZinc insulin can also contraindicate during the episodes of hypoglycemia.

Is There Any Potential Adverse Reactions?
The hypoglycemia, insulin antagonism/ resistance, rapid insulin metabolism, insulin-induced hyperglycemia Somogyi Effect, and local or systemic reactions are the potential adverse reactions from ProZinc insulin.
Of the above the most common adverse reaction observed is hypoglycemia. Its indicating signs are: weakness, changes in behavior, muscle twitching, depression and anxiety. In severe hypoglycemia cases, seizures and coma can occur. Hypoglycemia can be fatal in an affected cat if a prompt treatment is not received.
The risk of hypoglycemic episodes can be minimized by appropriate veterinary monitoring of blood glucose, modification of insulin dose and routine as needed, and stabilization of activity and diet. The attending veterinarian should evaluate other adverse reactions as well on a case by case basis to determine if an alteration in therapy is required, or if alternative therapy should be considered.
What Are The Precautions?
Animals with severe ketoacidosis, lethargy, anorexia, and/or vomiting should be stabilized with short-acting insulin. An appropriate supportive therapy should be given until their condition is stabilized. As with all insulin products including ProZinc insulin, cautious patient monitoring for hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia are essential to attain and maintain adequate glycemic control and to prevent related complications.
Over dosage can result in profound hypoglycemia and death of the cat. Progestogens, certain endocrinopathies and glucocorticoids can have an antagonistic effect on insulin activity. Thus, avoid using Progestogen and glucocorticoid.
